![]() ![]() The common jargon in the photography world is to call it a walk-around lens. That makes it useful for travel photography or taking on hikes where you want to keep the weight and size of the equipment you carry to a minimum. ![]() Photographers who don't want to mess around with changing lenses (I don't) will like the wide angle view at 18mm, the strong magnification you get at the other end of the zoom at 135mm, and all the focal lengths in between. Both pro photographers and newbies will enjoy having a lens that can be used for a large variety of situations. The 18 to 135mm is a very useful range of zooming. The Canon 18-135mm has more than double the telephoto reach of the 18-55mm lens. We won't do a full 18-55mm versus 18-135mm comparison here, but we'll touch on the biggest and most obvious difference. The 18-135 lens makes a great choice to use as a kit lens substitute for the most common kit lens that Canon sells, the 18-55mm lens. They'll be plenty of photos showing you what kind of photography can be done when using an 18-135mm zoom lens. This post will answer that question as well as answer the question of whether the 18-135 lens is any good as a stand alone lens. Did I NEED a new lens? Heck no! Being the geeky Canon shooter that I am, I already own enough Canon lenses to handle just about any situation I'll encounter.and I'm already in enough hot water with my wife.īut, what about you? You're wondering whether the Canon EF-S 18-135mm lens is useful for new photographers. We cannot say to what extent this is due to a different lens design or is caused by the ‘sample variation’.ĬonclusiON: REVIEW Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.The Canon 18-135mm lens had been on my radar as soon as I started looking to upgrade from my Canon 70D. What was noticeable was that the chromatic aberrations were slightly higher than with the version II of the same lens. If you systematically stop down this lens one stop, then the results are generally pretty good. But that halves after stopping down one stop. The numbers are less good in RAW, with two stops at 18mm at f/3.5. If you stop down a bit or zoom in, the vignetting decreases. At 0.8 stops at the full aperture, it is not that bad at all in jpeg. The vignetting is as expected and at its highest in the wide-angle position. In the wide-angle position, the distortion is 1.5% barrel-shaped, and that suddenly turns into a very minor pincushion distortion in the telephoto position. It may have to do with our specific test copy or with the extra play that is in the tube when you zoom all the way out. Stopping down one stop, to f/8, makes a big improvement. At 55mm, the sharpness at full aperture is significantly less. The sharpness is reasonable, especially at the shorter focal points. There are 11 elements in 9 groups, one of which is an aspherical element. We have reviewed Canon’s 18-55 mm lenses that score better, but they cost a lot more. The image quality of the Canon EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 DC III is not even that crazy when you compare it to the price. ![]() The lens does not have image stabilization. ![]() It’s pretty well put together, although the play in the tube at 55mm is actually a bit bigger than we would like to see. The lens does have a nice wide zoom ring and has one switch: for changing between autofocus and manual focus. The focus ring is actually not a focus ring, but just a ribbed thickening of the front of the lens, so you can grab the tube and twist it a bit. The housing of the lens is entirely of plastic, up to and including the mount. BUILDĮverything about the Canon EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 DC III breathes cost savings, or – if you want to put it more positively – efficiency. Certainly when you go to a workshop and see the person next to you shooting effortlessly in low light with almost the same lens, but with ‘IS’ on it. Hopefully you will learn quickly from that, but it does take away some of the fun of shooting. Without image stabilization, that is punished immediately because you have a blurred photo. Novice photographers often do not have the best shooting technique, and a mistake in keeping the camera steady or selecting the correct shutter speed is then easily made. That it has no image stabilization is a pity, especially for the target group. A full plastic housing and no image stabilization is a step back in time, just like the Canon EOS 4000D is in some ways. The Canon EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 DC III is a standard zoom lens without frills. LIGHTWEIGHT: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DC III ![]()
